Good Question!!
For the conan's bunch, you can twist the harp on itself and turn it into interesting shapes, as well as pulling off all the reeds!!
That should mute your harp.
Or else, you can do this:
Take a rigid cylinder (i'm not sure about the spelling) or a tube. Drill a slot about the size of your harmonica along that tube.
Then on the edges of the slot stick some rubber or thick adhesive.
Put your harp into that slot, leaving a the mouthpiece in a way you can play it. It should be enough to make only you hearing the harp. If it is not enough, you can put some thick moss into the cylinder to catch the sound of the harmonica.
This will not completely mute your harmonica but it would help ya.
You will also find that you can get some interesting effects with such gear.
Larry Schwartz makes some stuff like that. That's pretty accurate and very useful and handy.

Which is the best way to "mute" a harp or, instead, lower its sound? The
question comes to my mind each time I have free moments at my job, I would like
to practice for a while without being listened by neighbours ;o)
